Dubai’s new wellness trend: luxury cars with built-in spa features

AD

Residents of congested, sprawling cities are spending more time in their vehicles — and luxury car brands have taken note. As wealthy buyers increasingly seek experiences that promote wellbeing, reduce stress, and enhance longevity, automakers are transforming their cabins into hi-tech, personalised wellness pods.

According to a 2025 survey by Autotrader, South African motorists spend an average of 10 days, 4 hours, and 48 minutes annually commuting — followed closely by India. For many, the car is one of the few private spaces they have while navigating a busy day. Luxury brands are responding by placing greater emphasis on making the cabin quiet, comfortable, and stress-free.

Features that define the wellness cabin

General manager of Oscar Luxury Auto LLC, Waleed Al Balushi, explains that brands are adding a range of features to enhance the in-car experience: massage seats, heated and ventilated seating, premium air filtration, ambient lighting, premium sound systems, fragrance systems, soft-close doors, and exceptionally quiet cabins.

"Mercedes has the Energising Comfort programmes, Range Rover offers excellent air purification and massage seats, Bentley features wellness seating, and Rolls-Royce focuses on creating a calm and peaceful cabin," says Al Balushi. "These features make a big difference, especially for customers who drive a lot or have a chauffeur."

Luxury meets wellness

Roberto Lopes Da Silva, General Manager of NIO UAE, explains that this trend is "part of a much broader shift in how people define luxury." Traditionally associated with craftsmanship and performance, luxury now also asks: "How does this product make me feel?"

Ricky Mullins, Executive Vice President at Exeed, adds that people want their time inside cars to be comfortable and enjoyable — especially in the UAE, where a typical day involves school runs, commuting, traffic, and long drives between cities.

For younger customers, wellness is no longer a part-time pursuit. "It's about how well they slept, how much they moved, stress levels, recovery, mindfulness, air quality," Mullins explains. "So it makes complete sense that the car is becoming part of that conversation too."

Spa on wheels

NIO's vision was to design spaces that resemble a contemporary living room. Features include Hot Stone Massage, Zero Gravity Reclining (up to 120 degrees), customisable ambient lighting, and an AI-powered companion called NOMI that adjusts climate, lighting, seating, and entertainment through voice interaction.

An in-built Tide app offers guided breathing exercises and meditation sessions, while Lounge Mode provides a tranquil setting with soothing sounds and adjusted lights and seats.

"What's interesting is that these features are often used during quieter moments — waiting to collect children, taking a break between meetings, charging the vehicle, or arriving home early," says Da Silva. "Those minutes become an opportunity to reset."

Other examples include Lincoln's Rejuvenate feature, which offers a multi-sensory spa-like experience with calming visuals, guided meditation, and digital scents diffused through the armrest.

Exeed models feature zero-pressure spa-grade massage seats, seat heating and ventilation, air purification, fragrance systems, and negative-ion air filtration. The ET REEV, for instance, has a zero-pressure passenger seat with massage, while the MX offers PM0.3 filtration and one-touch odour removal.

Predicting the future

Experts believe these features will not stay limited to luxury cars. Al Balushi notes that technologies like heated seats and adaptive cruise control first appeared in luxury vehicles and are now widely available in affordable cars.

Mullins predicts cars will get smarter at gauging occupant needs — adapting to tiredness, outdoor temperature, air quality, preferred seating positions, and even wearable device data.

"For me, the most exciting direction is when technology becomes almost invisible," he says. "You should not have to go through ten menus to create the right environment."

Da Silva adds that the GCC region is particularly well-placed to embrace this shift. "People spend a significant amount of time in their vehicles, often in challenging climates, so comfort and well-being have a real impact on the ownership experience."

While it's still early days, one thing is certain: if these features become available across more cars, your next spa-like experience may be just a car door away.
